01 / Your operation

A port run is not the same as a long haul.

For a Houston trucking business, the starting point is the work you actually do. Tell us whether you collect containers, run a dry van route, or move loads with a pickup and trailer.

  1. Container and port work

If you collect containers around Houston, bring the terminal or equipment-provider agreement. Ask which requirements apply to a borrowed chassis or container as well as to the freight itself.

  2. Dry van and regional freight

Describe your regular destinations, operating radius and trips outside Texas. Share the types of freight and the highest value you expect to carry in one load.

  3. Hotshot and mixed loads

List the pickup or truck, trailer and loads you accept. If the work changes between local deliveries and longer trips, include both instead of describing only your shortest route.

02 / Coverage review

Match the coverage to the exposure.

Use these starting points to discuss your operation with an agent. Availability, limits and exclusions depend on the insurer and the policy offered.

  • Auto liability

Discuss the liability exposure from operating the truck and the limits requested by your customers.

  • Motor truck cargo

Review the goods you transport, load values and the proposed policy’s commodity restrictions and exclusions.

  • Physical damage

Review protection for the truck and trailer, their values and any lender or lease requirements.

  • General liability

Ask which business activities outside vehicle operation need a separate review.

Leased to a carrier? Ask separately about bobtail and non-trucking liability. The terms are not interchangeable; the lease, truck use and policy wording matter.

03 / What to prepare

Make the first conversation count.

You can start a request even if you do not have every document. The agent can explain what is needed next.

Request a truck insurance quote
  • Business name and USDOT or MC number, if applicable.
  • Truck and trailer details, VINs and current values.
  • Driver information, usual routes and commodities.
  • Current insurance, renewal date and customer requirements, if available.

For Houston container work, include equipment-interchange agreements and insurance instructions from the terminal or customer. These are separate from a simple list of trucks.

A quote request starts a conversation. It does not bind coverage or guarantee acceptance, pricing or a response time.

04 / Local questions

Houston questions, answered.

What should I bring for a Houston port drayage review?
Bring truck and trailer details, container or chassis agreements, typical commodities, maximum load value and written insurance requirements. Ask the agent to review borrowed equipment separately from motor truck cargo; do not assume one policy answers both questions.
Can I discuss local Houston routes and interstate trips together?
Yes. Describe both when requesting a quote, including destinations, mileage and how often you travel outside Texas. Availability and terms depend on the complete operation and insurer review, not just the city where the business is based.
